An Overview of Personality Disorders

Clients with personality disorders typically exhibit symptoms that are long-lasting and persistent. Symptoms include distorted or maladaptive cognitions, affective states, and interpersonal functioning. Differential diagnosis can be difficult because features of personality disorders link to other mental disorders. Identifying personality disorders begins with thorough, multi-dimensional, clinical, and diagnostic assessments. Treatment planning can help guide the process of therapy. Two commonly used approaches include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT). Outcome measurement is an important part of treatment because it allows the therapist and client to track progress over time.
