The purpose of this training is to familiarize staff and providers with the personal experiences of individuals, with severe and persistent mental illnesses, who are or have been consumers of mental health services.
In the first part of the training, participants will learn about the experience of six individuals with mental health issues (bipolar, schizophrenia, Dissociative Identity Disorder, etc.) who are in recovery. In the second part of the training, participants will learn about some of the guiding principles of recovery.
When we understand more about people with mental health issues, we learn how to provide better, more appropriate care. Barriers within communities are broken down and the ignorance that causes stigma is cleared away.
Hearing the story of someone who is overcoming a great obstacle, such as mental illness, not only inspires hope in people who are themselves struggling with mental illness or the mental illness of a loved one or client, but also offers evidence that treatment works and recovery is possible.
